On December 20, 2018, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security announcedย the U.S. will now require people who seek asylum at the southwest border to wait in Mexico while the U.S. immigration courts decide their asylum cases. This policy applies to people arriving in or entering the U.S. from Mexico (illegally or without proper documentation).

InReach strongly condemns this policy as illegal, immoral and dangerous for LGBTQ Central Americans seeking safety. We call on the Trump administration to not implement this policy or at least immediately grant an exemption for LGBTQ asylum seekers at the southwest border due their “credible fear” of remaining in Mexico while their asylum cases are decided in the U.S.

In response to this new policy, weโ€™ve added information for people traveling through or waiting in Mexico to seek LGBTQ asylum in the U.S. If this policy stands, we will look to scale the first ever resource website and app for LGBTQ asylum seekers to Mexico in 2020.
