About InReach
We are InReach, a trans-led tech nonprofit building the world’s first open source verified LGBTQ+ resource platform. InReach is available on web (desktop and mobile), native iOS, and Android. Our vision is to ensure every trans and queer person has on-demand access to the safe resources they need to thrive. Over 420,000 people have used InReach to access verified LGBTQ+ resources.
About the Role
Our Translation Proofreader Interns help improve the language accessibility of our platform by ensuring accurate, culturally competent, and inclusive translations. Unlike most websites that rely solely on automated translation (e.g., Google Translate), InReach uses Crowdin, a localization management system that allows real people to verify and edit machine-generated translations for improved quality.
For Summer 2025, we are seeking interns with professionally proficiency in at least one of the following languages:
- Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Korean, Pashto, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Tagalog, and Ukrainian.
Internship Details
- Summer 2025 Dates: Monday, June 23 – Friday, August 8, 2025
- Required hours per week: 15 (*interns can select their own hours–Monday through Friday–based on their schedule/time zone; all interns will use InReach's volunteer management system to log their hours for accountability)
- Location: Fully remote (from anywhere in the United States, Canada or Mexico)
- Compensation: Unpaid (InReach staff can assist with academic credit if applicable—please indicate this in your application.)
Responsibilities
- Report to InReach’s Resource Coordinator staff.
- Complete a comprehensive virtual training program covering LGBTQ+ rights, LGBTQ+ terminology, intersectionality, and the double marginalization of LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and displaced people.
- Use Crowdin to translate text from English into a second language.
- Proofread translations completed by volunteers, contractors, or external translators.
- Interns will strive to proofread a minimum of 10,000 words per week (Spanish and French) or 5,000 words per week (all other languages).
- “Accept” or “decline” machine-generated and human-created translations in Crowdin.
- Collaborate with the InReach translation team via Discord to address translation questions.
- Assist with additional translation-related tasks as needed.
Who You Are
- Pursuing or have obtained a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
- Professional proficiency in English and at least one of the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Korean, Pashto, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Tagalog, or Ukrainian.
- Reliable access to a computer and internet connection.
- Able to write in gender-inclusive language in both English and a second language (e.g., e/x in Spanish vs. a/o, folx vs. men and women in English).
- Willing to learn and use Crowdin, POINT (InReach’s volunteer management system for tracking hours), and Discord.
- Passionate about language justice, refugee rights, and LGBTQ+ advocacy.
- Available for at least 15 hours per week (Monday–Friday).
- Detail-oriented, reliable, and able to meet deadlines.
