Change the world with us

Share Your Perspective As A Local Community Reviewer (LCR)

With our history in LGBTQ+ asylum, we understand that our users’ experiences accessing even the same service can significantly differ based on factors such as their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, race/ethnicity, immigration status, languages spoken, home country, ability status, socioeconomic status, age, history with religion, and so much more.

Through contributing your unique perspective to the free InReach App as a Local Community Reviewer, you can help us to build a more inclusive and representative platform for the diverse LGBTQ+ community where everyone’s voice is heard.

Sharing your knowledge and perspective will help LGBTQ+ people make more informed decisions when selecting resources.

What You Will Do

As a Local Community Reviewer, you will share your experience with LGBTQ+ support services in your community to help InReach App users find the help they need.

  • Share your experience by reviewing and rating local services listed on InReach that you have personally accessed, have professional knowledge about (e.g., clients have used), and/or have a loved one who has accessed the service.
  • Suggest new affirming providers in your community for potential inclusion on InReach to help us expand our app (*all suggestions are subject to vetting by InReach’s Resource Team for safety).

Time Commitment

  • Leave as many or as few reviews as you’d like, on your own schedule!
  • This is a remote and flexible volunteer opportunity that will allow you to make a meaningful difference in the lives of LGBTQ+ people facing persecution or discrimination.
  • Hours are flexible. We anticipate some reviewers will volunteer on a recurring basis while others may share their knowledge of local resources during a few hours/a single day of volunteering.

Who We Are Looking For

We welcome LGBTQ+ people, family/loved ones of LGBTQ+ people, and service providers working with LGBTQ+ communities:

LGBTQ+ people : If you are a member of the LGBTQ+ community, InReach’s LCR program is a great way to share your lived experience and perspective on the local resources available in your community with other LGBTQ+ people.

If you have ever used any services in your community, you can contribute to InReach! Yes, it’s really that simple. The free InReach App lists a wide range of services, which we refer to as “resources”, for the diverse LGBTQ+ community:

  • “Crisis resources” (e.g., emergency housing, food, legal help, mental health hotlines, medical care, drop-in centers for LGBTQ+ youth, abortion care, and more)
  • “Quality of life resources” (resources that LGBTQ+ people need to not just survive but thrive, such as local community and social groups, spiritual support, art and music, sports and entertainment, haircuts and stylists, dental care, substance use, educational support for LGBTQ+ youth, career counseling, libraries, HIV and sexual health, language classes, and so much more).
Family/loved ones of LGBTQ+ peopleIf you have experience helping a LGBTQ+ family member or loved one access local services, you can share your perspective on the local resources available in your community through InReach’s LCR program.
Service providers working with LGBTQ+ clients: If you have professional experience helping a LGBTQ+ client(s) access local services, you can also share your perspective on the local resources available in your community through the LCR program.

LOCAL COMMUNITY REVIEWERS IN ACTION

Learn more about the Local Community Reviewer (LCR) program by reading the sample stories below.

ADAM (QUEER MAN WHO WANTS TO SHARE HIS LIVED EXPERIENCE ACCESSING HIV CARE)

Adam signs up for a Local Community Reviewer account to share his experience accessing HIV-related care in New York City. He uses an hour of free time to publish reviews of several different HIV/AIDs organizations listed on InReach that he has personally used. After leaving his initial reviews, Adam plans to return to InReach to continue to volunteer as a LCR whenever he uses new services in his community. For now, after one afternoon, Adam takes pride in sharing his perspective with other LGBTQ+ people in need of safe, verified resources.

MARY (LGBTQ+ ALLY WHO WANTS TO SHARE HER KNOWLEDGE OF LOCAL SERVICES)

Mary is an ally of the LGBTQ+ community who lives near Washington DC. She is excited to contribute her knowledge of local affirming resources to the free InReach App. During her first day volunteering, Mary focuses on searching the app for local organizations in the DC area that she has personally heard feedback on from LGBTQ+ family members, friends and colleagues. Over the next several months, Mary returns to the free InReach App periodically to leave new reviews and suggest new organizations as she learns more about her LGBTQ+ friends’ experiences accessing local services.

RYAN (ATTORNEY WORKING WITH LGBTQ+ CLIENTS WHO WANTS TO HELP LGBTQ+ PEOPLE IN NEED AND OTHER SERVICE PROVIDERS UNDERSTAND THEIR RESOURCE OPTIONS)

Ryan is an immigration attorney living in Texas. Ryan identifies as part of the LGBTQ+ community and works with LGBTQ+ clients on a regular basis. During his first day of volunteering for InReach, Ryan leaves reviews for local organizations that he has referred his clients to. He focuses on highlighting feedback from his clients on how friendly and accessible each organization is for LGBTQ+ immigrants and noting any differences in clients’ experiences based on languages spoken, home country, sexual orientation, gender identity, race/ethnicity or specific immigration status. The next month, Ryan has a spare hour at the office and uses it to suggest new LGBTQ+ affirming organizations in his area to InReach’s Resource Team for consideration. As Ryan works with more clients and hears more feedback on the local resources available, he logs in to his LCR account at InReach to easily share his local expertise with thousands of LGBTQ+ people and other providers looking for safe resources.

CAROLINE (QUEER WOMAN WHO WANTS HER COMPANY TO TAKE TANGIBLE ACTION TO SUPPORT HER COMMUNITY)

Caroline works in consulting and lives in Philadelphia. Although she doesn’t have direct experience accessing the resources listed on InReach, as a queer woman she wants to contribute to its growth. Caroline brings the LCR program to her company’s next LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group (ERG) meeting. Her coworkers are excited at the opportunity to help connect other LGBTQ+ people with safe resources in their community; in fact, several have personal experience using services listed on InReach. One ERG member, the mother of a trans kid, also expresses excitement about suggesting additional organizations that have supported her family. Caroline and her colleagues decide to devote some time during their next LGBTQ+ ERG meeting to registering for LCR accounts and beginning to review the onboarding materials. During the following meeting, they plan to start leaving reviews and suggesting new local organizations for inclusion. They also hope to share this volunteer opportunity with their company’s offices in other cities across the country to help grow the InReach App in more locations.

JAKE (TRANS MAN WHO WANTS TO HELP OTHER TRANS MASCULINE PEOPLE NAVIGATE LOCAL RESOURCE SELECTION)

Jake is a trans man living in Boston. After registering for a LCR account on InReach, Jake begins by searching the app for medical, mental health and legal providers he used when he began his transition in New York. He finds several organizations already listed on InReach, and leaves reviews/ratings based on his experience. He then suggests a few other organizations that are not already listed on InReach to the Resource Team to help expand the free InReach App in New York. Months later, Jake moves to Boston and begins the gender affirmation surgery process. During this process, Jake gets a referral from his surgeon to a local organization providing free mental health assessments for gender affirming surgery. Jake notices this local organization is not yet listed on InReach. He signs-in to his LCR account to suggest this local organization to InReach’s Resource Team. After his appointment, Jake leaves a rating and review detailing his experience with the organization. Jake hopes sharing his lived experience accessing services will help other trans men and trans masculine people in their journeys navigating resources.
